Meet Bubbles

Some decades ago in Africa, thousands and thousand of elephants were poached. Such a high number of elephants were poached because their tusks consist of valuable ivory that is often made into jewelry and other collectibles.

Some years back, a group of young elephants were orphaned as a result of this. Luckily, these elephants were saved and flown to the United States to start a new life, in a new country, with new friends.

These are all photos of Bubbles. Bubbles is one of the orphaned elephants aforementioned. This is her playing with one of her new friends, Bella. Bella is a three year old black labrador that loves to play together with Bubbles.

The surprising duo spend most of their time doing activities such as water sports, ball play, and lounging. Bubbles has many interspecies friendships, but this one is the most active of them.

These fun friends live in The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS) in South Carolina. Everyone at the center is quite the fan of Bubbles. The woman that adopted her said that when she met Bubbles that it was love at first sight.

The center had to think long and hard before adopting Bubbles. Elephants like Bubbles have a life expectancy of about one hundred years. That’s quite the commitment! They are most certainly happy with their decision though.

When Bubbles first arrived at the institute, she weighed only 340 pounds and was only 42 inches tall. Now, thirty years later, she weighs in at a whopping four tons, with a stance of over nine feet!

Did you think Bubbles looked familiar?

The middle-aged elephant is actually quite the celebrity. She has made several Hollywood appearances. She first found stardom in the popular comedy, Ace Ventura II, and can also be found in Malaika, and in a music video with Janet Jackson.
